The most dramatic title races of the last 20 years
Few moments in football create the same tension as a championship decided by a final-day goal, a late slip, or a single point. Over the past two decades, domestic leagues across Europe have produced unforgettable title battles involving established giants, ambitious challengers, and unexpected champions.
These races are memorable because they combine quality with uncertainty. Some were settled by goal difference, while others changed direction during the final minutes of the season. For supporters following live scores, match commentary, fixtures, and standings, every result carried enormous weight.
From Manchester City’s late comeback against Queens Park Rangers to Leicester City’s extraordinary rise, these contests remain essential viewing for football fans worldwide. Mitom TV’s coverage of live matches, highlights, results, and international football makes it easier to revisit the drama behind each championship.
Manchester City and the final-day miracle
The 2011–12 Premier League race remains one of the most dramatic finishes in modern football. Manchester City and Manchester United ended the season level on 89 points, but City held the advantage on goal difference. On the final day, City faced relegation-threatened QPR at the Etihad Stadium, while United played Sunderland.
City appeared to have lost control after conceding twice, trailing 2–1 deep into stoppage time. Edin Džeko equalised in the 92nd minute before Sergio Agüero scored the decisive goal in the 94th. The famous “Aguerooooo” moment delivered City their first Premier League title and turned a routine final round into football history.
The 2013–14 campaign offered another close battle between City and Liverpool. Liverpool looked set to win their first league title in the Premier League era, but a costly slip by Steven Gerrard against Chelsea and a dramatic draw at Crystal Palace damaged their momentum. City eventually finished with 86 points, two ahead of Liverpool.
Liverpool’s one-point heartbreak
The 2018–19 Premier League season produced an extraordinary statistical battle. Liverpool collected 97 points, a total that would have won the title in almost every other English season. Yet Manchester City finished with 98 after winning 14 consecutive matches to close the campaign.
Liverpool lost only once, away to City, while their rivals dropped points in just four league matches. The title was decided during a tense final day: City defeated Brighton 4–1 to secure the championship, leaving Liverpool to celebrate an outstanding season without the trophy.
Three years later, Liverpool again pushed City to the limit. In 2021–22, City finished with 93 points and Liverpool with 92. City trailed Aston Villa 2–0 on the final day before scoring three times in a remarkable comeback. Liverpool defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3–1, but City’s recovery preserved a one-point lead.
Spain’s late twists and unexpected champions
La Liga has also produced several gripping title races. In 2006–07, Real Madrid and Barcelona both finished on 76 points, but Real Madrid won the championship through the head-to-head rule. Fabio Capello’s team showed remarkable resilience, regularly scoring late goals and recovering from difficult positions during the closing weeks.
The 2015–16 season created one of football’s greatest surprises. Leicester City, valued as a relegation candidate before the campaign, built a commanding lead through the pace of Jamie Vardy, the creativity of Riyad Mahrez, and the control of N’Golo Kanté. Their title was confirmed when Tottenham Hotspur drew with Chelsea, completing one of the most unlikely championship stories ever seen.
In 2020–21, Atlético Madrid edged out Real Madrid by two points. Atlético led for much of the season but faced intense pressure after dropping points late in the campaign. A final-day victory over Real Valladolid secured the title and ended Atlético’s seven-year wait.
Germany and Italy decided by narrow margins
The 2022–23 Bundesliga race went down to the final matchday. Borussia Dortmund needed to defeat Mainz at home to win the title, but an early setback created immediate pressure. Bayern Munich won at Cologne through a late Jamal Musiala goal, while Dortmund could only draw 2–2. Both clubs ended on 71 points, with Bayern claiming first place through goal difference.
Italy’s 2021–22 Serie A campaign was another close contest. AC Milan and Inter Milan battled throughout the season, with Milan eventually finishing on 86 points, two ahead of Inter. Milan’s disciplined defensive performances and decisive results in the final weeks allowed them to reclaim the Scudetto after an 11-year wait.
